The aim of this study was to prove correlation between the presence of atherosclerotic changes in the carotid arteries expressed as the ratio between the thickness of the IMT and AoPWV and selected biochemical parameters associated with artery calcification; as well as the increment of the inflammatory state in ESRD patients treated with PD. The research included 80 end stage renal disease patients (37 women; 43 males) treated by peritoneal dialysis at the Nephrology Department of the Jagiellonian University Hospital in Cracow. Mean age of the patients was 52.9 years. Based on performed visualization tests in the group of patients with ESRD treated with peritoneal dialysis, increased levels of IMT, as well as AoPWV indicated dynamic progression of atherosclerosis in this group. An essential role in the progression of atherosclerosis in the group of patients on peritoneal dialysis plays the non-specific inflammatory state. It is measured by the levels of the following parameters: IL-6, IL-18, TGF-β, CRP, WBC, age and “classical” risk factors (LDL-cholesterol fraction, triglycerides). A direct proportional correlation was noted between the IMT index of the right and left carotid artery and BMI and an inverse proportion between the thickness of the IMT of the right carotid artery complex and the LDL fraction. Direct proportionality between the AoPWV value and white blood cell coun ; t, glucose concentration and age was shown.
