TY - GEN A1 - Magierowski, Marcin N2 - Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an endogenous gaseous mediator which can exert many physiological functions in the upper and lower gastrointestinal (GI) tract. This molecule is synthesized from L cysteine via cystathionine-γ-lyase/cystathionine-β-synthase (CSE/CBS) or 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase (3-MST) activity pathways. It has been shown that H2S is a potent vasoactive mediator and can exert neuromodulatory, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative properties. H2S is considered to act in the physiological gastric mucosal barrier and contributes to the mechanism of gastroprotection as it has been demonstrated in animal models of colitis or esophagitis. Therefore, aimed to investigate the role of H2S, endogenously produced or released from its inorganic donor, NaHS in gastroprotection of gastric mucosa against the damage induced e.g. by stress, 75% ethanol or aspirin (ASA, 125 mg/kg i.g.) and to define the mechanisms involved in beneficial activity of this gaseous mediator. This study have demonstrated that H2S produced endogenously in gastric mucosa via CSE/CBS pathway or derived from its donor NaHS exerts gastroprotection against gastric damage induced by variety of ulcerogenes. The gastroprotective mechanism of H2S may involve the cooperation of this gaseous molecule with nitric oxide and carbon monoxide.
