TY - GEN A1 - Stepaniak, Urszula N2 - The aim of the doctoral thesis was to assess the relationship between menopause and demographic, socio-economic factors (age, marital status, place of birth, place of living, social origin, education, employment, number of children), smoking, alcohol consumption, BMI, thickness of skin folds, nutritional factors in polish rural population. The study group was women at age 35-64 from POLMONICA Krakow Study. FFQ questionnaire and 24-hours recall were used to complete nutritional data. 2859 women were examined and 2638 women were included to the current analyses. There were 1429 women in the pre-menopausal group and 1209 women in the postmenopausal group. The risk of menopause was related with age (OR=l,58; 95%CI:1,52-1,64). Smoking was related with the risk of menopause after adjustment to the age (OR=l,68; 95%CI:l,03-2,72). Higher intake of folic acid and cysteine (per one standard deviation of these nutrients) were related with higher risk of menopause, respectively about 15% (sd=l 93,9 μg) and 16% (sd = 352,3 mg), adjusted to the age and smoking. Higher intake of vitamin B12 (sd = 0,8 μg) was related with lower risk of menopause at about 14%. There was no significant relationship between menopause and other examined factors.
