The aim of this study was to assess the influence of intima-media thickness (IMT), pulse wave velocity (PWV) and cardiovascular risk factors on mean cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) pulsatility (PI) and resistance (RI) indexes in the middle cerebral artery (MCA). Material and methods The study population: patients who had no occlusion or hemodynamically significant stenosis of carotid arteries (CA) or MCA, medical history of cerebral vascular event, dysrhythmia or pathological hematocrit value. IMT was calculated from maximum 12 measurements of CA. Transcranial doppler was used to estimate, et least for one MCA, values of PI, RI and CBFV. PWV was obtained as a distance difference between sensors divided by the transit time between the feet of the pulse waves recorded over the common carotid and femoral arteries. Results Mean (SD) age of 165 patients (50% women) was 56.7 (11,8) years. Statistically significant correlations of PWV, IMT, age with PI, RI, CBFV (p<0,001), PP with PI and RI (p<0,001) and BMI with CBFV (p<0,01) were found. Factors found to be influencing cerebral blood flow parameters were: hypertension (PI: p<0,001; RI, CBFV: p<0,05) and diabetes ( PI, RI: p<0,001; CBFV: p<0.01). Using regression models the significant influence on cerebral hemodynamic p}, abstract={arameters (CHP) showed: SBP (PI: p<0,01); PP (PI, RI: p<0.05); PWV (PI: p<0,05); IMT (PI, RI, CBFV: p<0,05). CBFV decreased with age and PI was greater in diabetic patients (p<0,05). Among drugs the nitrates influenced PI (p<0,001). CONCLUSIONS Increased SBP, PP, IMT, PWV and old age, male sex, long lasting diabetes negatively influence CHP. Except nitrates none of the used medications reveled independent influence on CHP.}, title={Systemic arterial properties and middle cerebral artery blood flow characteristic}, type={Praca doktorska}, keywords={cerebral flow, large arteries}, }
