 abstract={Intervertebral disc degeneration is a multifaceted pathology that is the main morphological cause of lower back pain, which affects approximately 80% of the generał population. The age of the symptoms onset ranges from 20 to 50 years, which coincide with the highest socio-economic activity. Due to utilization of the interdisciplinary methods such as evidence-based medicine tools, anatomie dissection with morphological assessment (including histological methods), radiological imaging (MRI), and molecular biology techniques it was possible to obtain high quality results. The gathered data may have broad practical implications as a part of scientific evidence on genetics behind the development of the lumbar spine degeneration and influence the interpretation of the radiologi cal studies. Nonetheless, to fully understand multigenic and pleiotropic relationships between the genotype and the phenotype (including the intervertebral disc disease pathogenesis) future well designed and high quality studies are required to be performed on numerous populations.},
