They provide the most credible information on what apothecaries did and what exactly their everyday work was like. Apothecaries’ manuals were not explored prior to this analysis. An abundant collection of old apothecaries’ notebooks available at the library of the Pharmacy Museum of the Jagiellonian University Medical College made it possible to carry out studies with a particular focus on the accurate analysis of cosmetic recipes. For this purpose, the 19th century handbooks were selected due to their importance at that time, often far greater than that of official pharmacopoeias. This paper discusses cosmetic recipes collected in the handbooks of the 19th century apothecaries which are held at the library of the Pharmacy Museum of the Jagiellonian University Medical College. The first chapter is devoted to the history of apothecaries’ handbooks and the beginnings of prescription recording. The second chapter includes an in – depth analysis of 33 handbooks of the 19th century apothecaries. In the third chapter, notebooks were divided according to the location where they were recorded, i.e. in the territory under the Russian rule or in the Austrian – Hungarian Empire.
