Behavioral studies assessed effects of the tested compounds and their combinations on different cognitive functions disturbed by MK-801. In addition, their potential antidepressant and anxiolytic activities were assessed. Ex vivo studies included the assessment of the effect of the tested compounds and their combinations on the level of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) protein and its gene expression in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. 5-HT6 receptor ligands modified the activity of APD against memory deficits in various ways, depending on the test used. In addition, WAY-181187 reduced pro-depressive and anxiogenic effects of haloperidol. Both ligands, administered with risperidone, revealed an anxiolytic effect. The addition of 5-HT6 receptor ligands to olanzapine had no significant effect on the depressive and anxiety behavior of animals.
