AIM: To analyze different types of care for elderly people among their family caregivers and to identify potential and actual intervention made by a family doctor in order to ensure better care provided by the caregivers. METHODS: A qualitative study design adopting a grounded theory approach was used. Unstructured, in-depth, qualitative interviews were conducted among 17 patients and their first informal caregivers living in Krakow. Theoretical sample included 3 family doctors. Interviews were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim and analyzed. RESULTS, CONCULUSIONS: The theory of role acceptance was composed of four dimensions: cognitive, emotional, communicative and in household duties. Five strategies of acceptance of the patient’s role and one strategy due to denial were identified. A caregiver’s attitude according to the patients’ needs included filling needs, creating needs, removal of the needs and needs deprivation. Some potential social interventions made by a family doctor were defined. These data enable family doctors to undertake adequate pattern of behavior towards different types of patients and efficiently use social interventions to make better communication within the patient’s family.}, title={The role of the family in the treatment of chronic non-terminal cardiometabolic diseases in the elderly – the perspective of family medicine}, type={Praca doktorska}, keywords={family caregiver, family doctor, cardiometabolic diseases, cardiovascular diseases}, }
