 abstract={The paper deals with the problem of safe cardiac operations with or without homologous blood transfusion. The present analysis confirms general findings that blood transfusion exposes patients to known and potential complications. In the case of coronary operations, patients who received blood transfusion the complication rate was almost 3 times higher than in patients without transfusion. The decision to transfuse blood should be made only in life-saving situations if alternative methods have failed.},
