In addition, the thesis aims to verify potential associations between the prevalence of neglect and health and other determinants of quality of life of older adults. The dissertation consists of three papers, one of which is a systematic review of the literature on definitions and indicators of neglect among older people, and the other two are based on data collected during interviews with randomly selected people aged 65 and over living in the Malopolska region. The first original paper examines the relationship between frequency of church attendance (and other variables) and quality of life, self-rated health and feeling of loneliness. The second presents the relationships and the mediating effect of neglect on the association between various variables and self-rated health. The findings confirm the identification difficulties and the lack of definitional and measurement standards relating to neglect of older adults. They emphasise the importance of the spiritual or religious aspect, and at the same time social involvement, for happy ageing. Furthermore, they show a significant association between self-rated health and neglect among men.
