The study was conducted at the beginning of each new academic year, in the same group of 196 students of nursing faculties \(full\-time first degree courses, at four universities in the region of Malopolska\). The study used diagnostic survey method and the following research tools\: an original questionnaire, the original Scale of Motivation to Choose the Nursing Profession and Nursing Education, the Interpersonal Reactivity Index by M. H. Davis, the Orientation Questionnaire \(SOC 13\) and the List of Personal Values by Z. Juczyński. On the basis of the conducted research it has been found that\:The predominant motivation of choosing education in nursing among the surveyed students was pro\-social. Among pro\-social motives, the ones of typically altruistic character were manifested with the highest intensity. The students whose decision to do a degree in nursing was made consciously and independently had more knowledge about the nursing profession before they started education in nursing, they had a more positive image of the nursing profession and manifested higher intensity of motivation aimed at the welfare of others.
