The study was conducted in 127 patients\: 58 women and 69 men. The control group consisted of 41 patients who had undergone surgery for conditions other than cancer. From each patient 5 blood samples were drawn\: before elective surgery, up to 1 month afterwards, and then 6, 12 and 24 months later. Besides IGF\-1 and free IGF\-1, IGF\-2, IGFBP\-2, IGFBP\-3, and ALS, the analysis also included measurements of CEA, CA 19\-9 and total protein and albumin. Obtained results showed that the evaluation of the IGF axis should depend on the ratio of its components to albumin, and not on their absolute concentrations in the serum. In colorectal cancer patients, particular consideration should be given to the location of the tumour and the patient's age, while in patients with changes in the rectum \- also the application of radiotherapy should be focused on. The observed disordered functioning of the IGF axis concerned mainly IGF\-1, free IGF\-1 and IGFBP\-2, but the most important in terms of prognosis seems to be the measurement of the ratio of concentration of IGFBP\-2 to albumin one month after surgery. It was also shown that the increased ratios of concentrations of free IGF\-1 and IGF\-1 to albumin after surgery may indicate incompleteness of performed surgery."]
