Search for: [Abstract = "Introduction\: Prostaglandins E2 and D2 \(PGE2 and PGD2\) play an important role in the pathophysiology of asthma, especially in aspirin\-induced asthma \(AIA\). In the airways, PGE2 has bronchoprotective, and PGD2 . proinflammatory effect. By the analysis of exhaled breath condensate \(EBC\) the pulmonary synthesis of these eicosanoids can be assessed. Objective\: To evaluate the role of PGE2 and PGD2 in the pathogenesis of asthma, especially in aspirin\-induced asthma. Methods\: 67 aspirin tolerant asthmatics \(ATA\), 79 patients with AIA and 66 healthy subjects \(HC\) were enrolled into the study. EBC and detailed clinical data were obtained from the participants. The patients performed spirometry. Concentrations of PGE2, PGD2 and their metabolites \(9ƒż,11s\-PGF2 and tetranor\-PGE\-M\) in EBC were measured by chromatography\/spectrometry and, for standardization, recalculated on palmitic acid concentration.Results\: There was higher level of PGD2 in EBC in groups of asthma than in HC group. AIA group was characterized by elevated 9ƒż,11s\-PGF2 and tetranor\-PGE\-M levels and raised PGD2\/PGE2 ratio in EBC. ATA patients with increased concentration of PGE2 in EBC had less severe asthma, with better control of disease, higher FEV1 and FEV1\/FVC. Conclusions\: In the stable disease PGD2 may be involved in maintaining the asthmatic inflammation. The feature of AIA may be increased mast cell activation. The imbalance between PGD2 and PGE2 may contribute to asthmatic attacks after aspirin and may result from increased metabolism of PGE2. PGE2 seems to play protective role in the respiratory system of patients with ATA."]
