Methods\: 942 participants uderwent\: medical interview, physical examination, blood specimen collection, carotid arteries ultrasound examination.Carotid intima – media thickness and presence of plaque were assessed. Results\: CIMT was 0,79 ± 0,11 mm. Excessive CIMT was revealed in 671 \(71,2%\) and carotid atherosclerosis in 358 \(38%\) persons. In patients with present atheromatous plaque greater CIMT was observed. The risk factors of intima – media thickening were\: arterial hypertension, low HDL concentration, sex, age and SBP, and of carotid atherosclerosis\: smoking, diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, excessive LDL concentration, age and SBP. Both intima – media thickening and occurrence of atheromatous plaque were more frequent in persons with coronary artery disease and metabolic syndrome. Conclusions\: The frequency of carotid intima – media thickening is about 71% and occurrence of carotid atherosclerosis is about 38%. The risk factors of increased CIMT and of carotid atherosclerosis are different. Increased IMT correllates significantly with occurrence of carotid atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease and metabolic syndrome."]
