In recent years, research has shown the association of dermatosis with numerous accompanying diseases, most often with cardiovascular diseases and metabolic syndrome, determining psoriasis as a predisposing factor. OBJECTIVE\: The aim of this dissertation was to evaluate the epidemiology of patients with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis and to study the levels of TNF\-α, IL\-12, IL\-23 and IL\-17 in patients’ blood in correlation with individual components of the metabolic syndrome. MATERIAL AND METHODS\: A retrospective study evaluated data from 3,331 hospitalizations and 1,537 outpatient cards of patients with psoriasis. For the study of cytokines 60 patients with severe psoriasis were included. Control groups were\: 15 subjects diagnosed with metabolic syndrome and 15 healthy voluntary subjects. The concentrations of IL\-12, IL\-17, IL\-23 and TNF\-α in serum were determined. RESULTS\: The level of the studied cytokines\: IL\-23 and TNF\-α was higher in patients diagnosed with psoriasis in comparison to the control group. Higher levels of IL\-17 were observed in patients with metabolic syndrome associated with psoriasis. The level of cytokines was also assessed in relation to the presence of specific co\-morbidities that are components of the metabolic syndrome.
