Search for: [Abstract = "Abnormalities in ANS functioning result in many differentpathophysiological disorders, including neuropathic pain. Sinceneuropathic pain is a specific type of chronic pain, there exists noestablished efficient treatment strategy. Melatonin is a potential newtherapeutical option as been a substance with antinociceptiveproperties. There exist no straightforward experimental data showing theinfluence of melatonin on neuropathic pain and explainingmechanisms of its action. Therefore the aim of this study was toevaluate\: the role of ANS in the origin of neuropathic pain\; theantinociceptive properties of melatonin and its influence on braintissue redox state and the influence of the ANS on melatonin’s actionpotential. The obtained results point at the crucial role of the balancebetween the branches of the ANS in the pathogenesis of neuropathicpain and at the phenomena, such as facilitation. Our data show also theantinociceptive properties of melatonin – in a dose – dependentmanner, due to antioxidative potential and not because of the influenceof the ANS.Our results support the hypothesis that melatonin could be applied asa new pharmaceutic in the combined therapy of neuropathic pain. Ourobservations point also at the EPR spectroscopy in vivo as at the usefuldiagnostic tool for all the disorders sharing reactive oxygen speciesinvolvement in their etiology."]
