Search for: [Abstract = "A prospective randomized trial carried out in the Department of Thoracic Surgery, Jagiellonian University Collegium Medicum, John Paul II Hospital, Cracow to determine whether there is a difference between the suction and water seal type of drainage in patients after partial lung resections and, if so, which type of drainage is more effective. The study included 254 patients undergoing lung resection. In the morning of the first postoperative day patients were randomized in the ratio of 1\:1, using a computerized random numbers generator. Patients assigned to group A continued suction drainage –20 cm H2O, while in group B drainage was changed to water seal. Groups consisted of the 127 patients each. There were statistically significant differences found between the groups in favor of the water seal drainage as far as volume and duration of the drainage were concerned,. There was also statistically significant difference in time to bedside mobility. The time of air leak duration was shorter in the water seal group, but the difference did not reach the level of statistical significance. There was no difference in the perceived post\-operative pain. There was no statistically significant difference between the numbers of patients requiring conversion between types of drainage.
