Search for: [Abstract = "Based on data from family studies the concept of genetic susceptibility for aneurysmal SAH is increasingly supported. The aim of the study was to determine whether the polymorphisms of MMP\-2 \(–1575 G\/A, –1306 C\/T, –790 T\/G i –735 C\/T\) and MMP\-9 \(–1562 C\/T, 279 R\/Q, 574 R\/P i 668 Q\/R\) influence the risk for SAH. A total of 241 SAH patients and 241 subjects from the general population were studied. MMP\-2 and MMP\-9 genotypes were determined by PCR and RFLP methods. Data concerning demographics and risk factors for SAH were collected. The study showed that AA \(–1575 G\/A polymorphism\), TT \(–1306 C\/T polymorphism\) and GG genotypes \(–790 T\/G polymorphism\) of the MMP\-2 gene are independent risk\-reducing factors for SAH. The haplotype A\-1575T\-1306G\-790 was less frequent in SAH patients and the haplotype G\-1575C\-1306T\-790 more frequent in SAH patients as compared to the control group. No significant associations were observed between the studied MMP\-9 polymorphisms and SAH. The study showed that hypertension, current cigarette smoking, and excessive alcohol intake are important modifiable risk factors for SAH. Whereas, hypercholesterolemia and higher BMI are independent risk\-reducing factors for SAH. Further studies are needed to define the significance of MMP\-2 and MMP\-9 genes polymorphisms in SAH. Determination of genetic markers may be fundamental for effective prevention strategies."]
